learning new skills

Hi chums,

I hope you’re all fine and dandy. This week I have been super busy learning new skills!

Blowdrying with Kevin Fortune

I kicked off the week with a two day blow-drying course at the Kevin Fortune Hair Styling Academy. Believe it or not, there is a lot that goes into the perfect blow-dry – volume, durability and movement… Well now, I can give you all of it! So after being recommended this course by another artist I know, I packed my bags and headed off to Oxford Circus. Kevin’s academy is literally a stone’s throw away from my old uni campus, London College of Fashion, and it was super nice (and nostalgic) being back on my old stomping ground!! Kevin’s course taught me so much and in a relaxed environment. I felt like my brain was in overdrive trying to absorb and process all this delicious information. The two days with Kevin taught me several new techniques: including sectioning the hair in a different formation to give a much more modern finish to the blow-dry; as well as methods to achieve a variety of different styles. The result? I left the course feeling confident, knowledgable and like my skill set was bang up to date. If you’re a stylist that wants to develop your blowdrying techniques, I would recommend this course without hesitation!

As an artist, it is reeeeaaally important to keep my skill-set up to date; I don’t think you ever stop learning or getting better at your craft. I am always developing and improving (don’t believe anyone who says they know everything about everything!!). One of the elements that I miss most about working for a cosmetics company, is the regular, invaluable training that I used to get. No worries, it’s just now I have to be proactive and source my own training.

LoveHair

Since going freelance, as well as training with Kevin Fortune, I have also done a four day course with Jo Irving from LoveHair. I absolutely loved Jo’s hair course and would recommend it, unreservedly, to everyone. I learnt masses in only four days and as a result of the course, my confidence in hair has grown so much. Jo is flexible, patient and creates a warm, happy learning environment. After each training session, I left feeling excited and inspired and looking forward to honing my new skills. The other cool thing about training with Jo is, that once you have completed one of her courses, you are automatically entered into the LoveHair Tribe, which is basically a group of hard-working, super talented babes who have totally got your back. It’s the best. We meet up regularly to chat, catch up and share ideas and inspiration. It’s such an amazing network. In fact, I knew two of the other hairstylists on Kevin’s blowdrying course because they had also trained with Jo and are apart of the LoveHair Tribe! I flipping loved that.

Bridal hair and makeupThis week has been full on but totally amazing, I love love love learning (a geek at heart) and can’t wait to practise all the new tips and tricks that I’ve picked up… Valentine’s day is just around the corner, who needs a gorgeous bouncy blow-dry for date night?! I shall leave you with some images of the styles I learnt to create at each of the training courses I attended.
